A Doctor of Chiropractic

Ever wonder about the education your doctor has received? You want to make informed decisions about who you entrust your health to.

The profession of Chiropractic is licensed and regulated in all 50 states in the US and in over 30 countries world-wide. The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) was established in 1963 and operates quite similarly to the National Board of Medical Examiners. One of the functions of the NBCE (more here on their website) is to ensure standardization and fairness across state licensing boards. These state licensing boards regulate the education, experience and moral character of candidates for licensure, among other things.

education

Before acceptance into a 5 year program of study at a chiropractic college, prospective students must complete a minimum of 3 years of undergraduate work outlined below. Compared to medical schools, chiropractic colleges require more courses for admission and more classroom hours for graduation. Despite this fact, some people still remain confused about what kind of education Doctors of Chiropractic receive. This information is a matter of public record, but we want you to see for yourself the training Dr. Swick has received.

Both chiropractic and medical schools require certain course work in undergraduate studies for admission to their schools. Although exact requirements vary by school, very few schools (both medical and chiropractic) require a bachelor's degree. In fact, some medical schools require the bare minimum of undergraduate requirements. Before entering chiropractic college, Dr. Swick received a Bachelor of Science & Biology degree and is one course shy of his Masters in Education.

Courses required for entrance

While basic requirements for entrance are very similar, once in Chiropractic College, students receive significantly more hours of instruction in Human Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, and Rehabilitation as well as X-ray analysis and Diagnosis than their MD counterparts. Rest assured, Dr. Swick is highly qualified to evaluate the state of your health.

Working Together

Trivializing the education of today's Doctors of Chiropractic is an outdated belief from another era. In some chiropractic colleges, medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy are permitted to teach certain courses, such as laboratory diagnosis. Likewise, some medical schools have doctors of chiropractic as full-time faculty members. However, Doctors of Chiropractic must teach courses in which MD's or DO's don't have sufficient education or practical clinical experience.

Licensing & post graduate education

The chiropractic physician must pass four levels of national board exams and a physical therapy exam to be eligible to sit for state board examinations. State board exams involve both written examination and practical exams involving clinical practice and x-ray interpretation. Dr. Swick has been board certified by both US and Canadian National boards as well as the NY state board.

Since graduation, Dr. Swick has kept on the cutting edge of his field by regularly attending continuing education seminars in nutrition, radiology, diagnosis and chiropractic techniques.
